The parents of Marie Mazeau have established a scholarship in memory of their daughter. Marie was a premature baby when she was born; she weighed only one pound – one ounce. She worked hard to overcome her obstacles, despite her rough start. She was a third grader at Daisy Ingraham School and an excellent reader with a vivid imagination. Marie loved animals and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Marie had been paired with a high school student as part of the high school’s Peer Counselor Program. This program provides high school students the opportunity to see with their hearts the simple truths that cannot be found in a textbook.

Purpose – The goal of this scholarship is to recognize the peer counselor who has best put their heart and soul into the program.

Criteria for Selection –

1. The candidate must be a member of the Westbrook High School graduating class.
2. The candidate must have been enrolled in the Peer Counselor Program.
3. Candidates who intend to pursue an education in a health related profession i.e., physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, veterinarian, nursing, medical doctor will be given special consideration, although this is not a requirement for the scholarship.

Scholarship Board – The committee consists of the Principal, the Peer Counselor Program advisor, and one other member of the Guidance Department staff. The name will be submitted to the Westbrook Foundation who will make the award.

Procedure to Apply –

1. The candidate must complete a “Westbrook Foundation Application”.
2. The candidate may be called for a personal interview by the committee.

Notification - A formal presentation of the scholarship will be given to the successful candidate at graduation.

Award – A one-time award of $500 will be awarded to the candidate at graduation.

Deadline - Applications are due in the Westbrook High School Guidance Office on Monday, May 2, 2011 by 2:30 PM.
